My School website proves popular
Issue 194 - 05 Feb 2010
ISSUE 194, February 4, 2010: A controversial new website which ranks schools is so popular it stopped working within hours of going live last Thursday.
The website received 2.5 million hits in its first nine hours, leaving some curious parents unable to download pages as the servers struggled to cope.
The site marks almost 10,000 public and private schools, both primary and secondary, on reading, writing, spelling, grammar and numeracy.
A red mark is a poor score and a green mark is a good score. The pages for schools which are doing well are covered in green, whereas struggling schools' pages show a sea of dark red.
The website has information on how wealthy the school community is, the percentage of Indigenous students, and attendance rates. Australian Greens senator Sarah Hanson-Young said the site did not tell the whole story about a school. - AAP
