Gag Greens from Obama heckling: Fielding
Friday, 5 February 2010 9:48:00 AM

NATIONAL, February 5, 2010: Family First Senator Steve Fielding wants the Australian Greens gagged from heckling US President Barack Obama when he visits Australia next month.

Greens senators famously heckled former US President George W. Bush, over the Iraq War, when he was addressing a joint sitting of parliament in 2003.

They were escorted from the chamber during the kerfuffle.

Senator Fielding is concerned about a repeat performance.

"Maybe we should be moving a motion that says the Greens won't slag the US president when they (sic) arrive in Australia and embarrass the Australian people," he told the Senate on Thursday.

"Maybe the motion should read that we gag them from being absolutely idiotic ... like they've done in the past."

President Obama has been invited to address a joint sitting of parliament during his visit in March. - AAP
