Indigenous workers in the spotlight
Issue 110 - 27 Jul 2006
ISSUE 110, July 27, 2006: The Child Support Agency used NAIDOC Week recently to launch its Indigenous Recruitment and Career Development Strategy 2005-08. “This Strategy is part of the whole-of-government approach to make the Australian Public Service more representative of Australian society,” said CSA General Manager, Matt Miller. “It’s part of CSA’s commitment to supporting our people to do the best job that we can for our customers.”
The Strategy was developed to improve CSA’s recruitment and retention of Indigenous Australians as employees. In the past six months, 14 new Indigenous officers joined CSA, adding to the 30 Indigenous officers already delivering services to separated parents around Australia. Artist and CSA Indigenous officer, Paul Clowry thinks the strategy’s a good idea. “So far, I’ve received positive feedback on what CSA’s doing with its Indigenous recruitment drive and it’s really good that we’re doing this. I’d like to see the private sector adopt such a strategy,” Mr Clowry said.
Over the next few years, CSA staff will have the opportunity to take part in Indigenous Cross Cultural Training. This training outlines some of the experiences of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples and helps non-Indigenous Australians to understand our similarities and differences.
