Long Time Coming Home tells the inspiring story of Marjorie Woodrow, NSW’s most famous lost and stolen wages and savings campaigner.

If you don’t already know Marjorie, she’s the 82-year-old Aboriginal elder who has been battling the NSW government for two decades for the return of wages and savings taken from her more than 60 years ago.

Long Time Coming Home tells Marjorie’s story of her removal from her parents; her treatment at the hands of ‘Aboriginal protectors’; her time spent in the infamous Parramatta Girls Home and her escape from government control.

Marjorie’s tale is, ultimately, one of happiness. Despite plenty of tragedy in the book, Marjorie is finally reunited with her mother just a few years before her mother dies.

One of the features of the book is the inclusion of reproductions of much of the paperwork that charted Marjorie’s life, produced by the Aborigines Welfare Board. It’s fascinating and at times infuriating reading.

Interestingly, former NSW Premier Bob Carr wrote the foreword to Long Time Coming Home, urging people to listen to stories like those from Marjorie Woodroow. Ironically, within a few years, Carr was accused of suppressing an explosive NSW cabinet report which admitted the theft of tens of millions of dollars in Aboriginal wages and savings.

Carr apologised in parliament and the NSW government is now promising to pay back the missing funds.

Long Time Coming Home is an engrossing read from the nation’s most inspiring octagenarian. So if you do one good thing this year, purchase and read Long Time Coming Home – the battle to retrieve the NSW lost and stolen Aboriginal wages and savings began here. And all proceeds from the sale of Long Time Coming Home go directly to Marjorie and help her to continue her battle with the NSW government (to this day, Marjorie has still not been repaid one single cent, although her campaigning will undoubtedly to lead to other Aboriginal people being reimbursed their wages and savings).

If Long Time Coming Home and the tale of Marjorie Woodrow’s courage and fierce determination doesn’t inspire you, we'll give you your money back (and arrange for you to see a therapist).
